Starting Solids: A Simple Guide for Parents

Introducing your baby to solid foods is an exciting and important milestone. But not without its worries, especially as first time parents there is much to learn. As a maternal health and pediatric occupational therapist (and a mom of 3!), I’m here to help you make this transition smooth and enjoyable for both you and your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends starting solids around 6 months of age. However, each baby is unique, and readiness can vary. Look for these signs:- Sitting up with little support
- Showing interest in food
- Good head control
- Swallowing food instead of pushing it out with their tongue
Additional things to keep in mind:
- Knowing the difference between gagging vs. choking
- Gagging is a natural reflex to protect your baby from choking. Your baby might cough, make a face, or their eyes might water. Sometimes, they might even bring the food back up. This happens because babies have a sensitive gag reflex that helps them learn to manage different textures and sizes of food. It usually occurs when food goes too far back in their mouth too quickly. Stay calm and encourage your baby, as gagging is a sign they are learning to handle food safely.
- Choking is when something blocks your baby's airway, making it difficult for them to breathe. Your baby may be silent, unable to cry or make noise, and may have a panicked look. They might also start to turn blue if they can't breathe. Choking happens when food or an object completely or partially blocks the airway. If your baby is choking, it's an emergency. Perform infant choking first aid (back blows and chest thrusts) and call emergency services immediately.
- Always supervise your baby during meals and offer age-appropriate and correctly sized pieces of food to minimize the risk of choking.
