Frequently asked questions

What does a maternal health occupational therapist do?

As a maternal health occupational therapist, I support women through pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood. I help moms transition to this new role, manage the mental load, build daily routines, care for their babies, and feel more confident in this season. My approach is holistic and personalized—supporting your body, mind, and daily life as it shifts with motherhood. My goal is to provide you with as many tools in your toolbox for you to learn and use.

What ages do you work with?

I work with infants (0–12 months) and young children, as well as moms in pregnancy and postpartum. Whether your baby is working on motor milestones, or you’re a mom recovering from delivery or navigating new roles, I tailor support to the unique needs of both individuals and the parent-child relationship.

How can occupational therapy help during pregnancy or postpartum?

Occupational therapy helps you feel more supported, prepared, and connected in motherhood. I offer support for body mechanics, pain management, postpartum recovery, emotional regulation, infant care, and routines. Whether you're struggling with overwhelm, sleep, or just want to feel more like yourself again—OT can help

What does a typical session look like with an occupational therapist?

The initial evaluation usually consists of:

  • Formal/informal assessment and evaluation

  • Parent interview for additional background info

  • Provide information and resources on mom and/or baby care.

  • Teach exercises, strategies, and activities for home exercise program

  • Answer any questions and address any concerns you may have.

How can occupational therapy support baby development?

As a pediatric OT, I support infant development through play, movement, sensory input, and feeding. I help parents understand what’s expected at each stage and offer strategies if your baby is showing signs of delay, difficulty calming, or challenges with feeding and motor skills.t they need as well. My goal is not “fix” the problem, but to educate and provide resources to parents to better understand and support their child’s growth and development.

When should I be concerned about my baby’s development?

If your baby is missing milestones, has trouble with tummy time, feeding, or feels hard to soothe—trust your gut. OT can help assess and guide your baby’s development so you don’t feel stuck waiting and worrying. Early support is always better than late. I’m big supporter of being proactive when it comes to childhood milestones, don't wait for the yellow flag to turn red before seeking out support.

Can OT help with feeding issues in babies?

Yes! I specialize in mom and baby feeding support, including breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and the transition to solids. I use a responsive, developmentally informed approach that supports both feeding skill development and the emotional experience for mom and baby. I have specialized training in lactation, oral ties, bodywork, and maternal mental health to further support any feeding concerns. Often times people don’t realize that it’s not just about the feeding skills, but baby’s overall body strength, coordination, and sensory processing skills.

What types of concerns can you help with as an OT for moms?

I support moms with issues like postpartum recovery, pelvic (external) and core health (ergonomically, not medically), emotional overload, routine-building, mom guilt, and reconnecting with your sense of self. I also help moms feel more equipped to care for their babies without sacrificing their well-being. As a mom of 3 and a postpartum anxiety and depression survivor, I have been where you are before.
